Introduce yourself and tell us about your business.
Hi, my name is Charde Lambert. I own SoFine Beauty Lounge, a salon where we meet most of your beauty needs under one roof, a comfortable environment where you can meet your beauty needs while sipping on a mimosa/coffee or tea with free wifi so you can work while you chill.
What made you start your business?
I got my first job as an Assistant Beauty Buyer at age 22, 8 months in the company’s investment pulled the plug and we all lost our jobs, from that day I decided that I won’t put my livelihood into anyone else’s hands but my own and I started my journey as an entrepreneur.
What is your background? Education, Work Experience.
I studied Fashion and Textile management always dreaming of being a fashion buyer. I then went on to working on the superyachts and came back to South Africa and followed my dream as a buyer, things didn’t work out as expected. Microblading had just landed in the country and decided to jump onto the bandwagon, and that’s what I did for three years. I felt like I needed more of a challenge and decided to open SoFine Beauty Lounge.
How long have you been in business? In this business? In other businesses?
I have now been my own boss for four years, microblading for 3.5 years, and the owner of SoFine Beauty Lounge for 8 months.
What are the advantages of this form of business ownership?
I love people, I love making people feel beautiful and I get to do this every single day of my life. Meeting new women and making sure they leave feeling like an absolute Queen is my goal.
How did you get started in this business?
I started microblading, I made a success out of myself doing this and gained a following and clientele, from there I expanded to the salon from there.
How do the social, economic, environmental, technological, legal and political environments impact your business?
Beauty is a very fical industry – socially women spend money on themselves when they feel good about themselves and when they’re not feeling good about themselves to make themselves feel better. It is however also a luxury and when the budget is tight they cut back on beauty treatments. The industry is always changing and you need to make sure as 1 salon in thousands that you are on top of the industry changes to stay ahead.
How do you market your business?
My Business is purely word of mouth, extra marketing that I do is based on all social media platforms, paid and unpaid.
Does your business have a stated mission statement, the reason that this business exists?
The reason we exist is to cater to women that are busy and cannot always find the time as we have wifi and space to sit for women to attend to work whilst they’re busy attending to their beauty needs.
What are some of the challenges you face and how do you overcome them?
Competition is one of the major challenges as a small start-up salon, you compete with the likes of Sorbet. I have ensured that my prices are competitive and that my service is of a high standard as well as offering small things such as they mimosa and coffee bar which with time will expand.
Advice for any woman considering starting a business?
There are so many things to consider before starting a business, I would say you would have to ask yourself the following:
- Is your business idea something that is solid and your vision is clear,
- Are you ready to completely dedicate every waking hour of your life to your business, when you’re physically working and when your not, mentally you are always working on ideas, marketing, etc. There are no off days, no sick days, no annual leave days.
- Be prepared to persist even when you feel like quitting because this is when you are at the most vulnerable place in your business.
If you can answer all these questions positively you are ready to take the leap and you will never look back – what you put in will always be what you get out.
